In 2001, the club AIR opened it’s doors in Daikanyama, Tokyo. It was a new concept for the club scene in Tokyo based on the successes of Yellow in Nishi-Azabu.
Since then, it has became the leading venue of the Japanese club and dance music scene. Across multiple genres and cultures, AIR pushed the boundaries and constantly redefined the norms for clubbing in Japan. AIR closed on the day 2016 started, but the end of AIR was just the beginning of making space in the scene for the next big thing.
In making this documentary, Strategy explored the questions of; How has AIR influenced DJs, club goers and club culture? What will be carried on into the future?
In conjunction with Red Bull Japan, Strategy has produced the documentary using “The End of the Beginning” as the keyword, which also happened to be the name of the final closing event on December 31st, 2015.
Strategy interviewed world class DJs, both international and domestic, as well as the club founder himself, to reveal the story from behind the scenes. This documentary is a testament to the success of AIR and its impact and a prelude to the future of the club music scene.
